Full Description

A subdivided oval enclosure is marked on the Tithe Map for Luccombe at SS 9162 4491. The two halves are numbered 696 (west) and 696a (east); the Apportionment describes these as follows: 696: Pitt Orchard (Willows and Orchard), part of Withycomb's; owned by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, occupied by Benjamin Floyde. 696a: Wood in Pinspit (coppice), part of Witchanger; owned by Francis Worth Esqre, occupied by William Peak. [1] The feature is recorded on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Edition Ordnance Survey maps. It is depicted as an earthwork bowl containing trees and labelled Pinspit. [2-4] The feature still appears to be extant. It is still labelled Pinspit but is described as a disused refuse tip, although it is again shown as wooded. [5]
