MEM22679 - Post-medieval prospecting pit on The Chains (Monument)

The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, which included this site. Noted was a sub-rectangular hollow, 9 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1 metre deep, with a mound on its eastern edge measuring 12 metres long, 2 metres wide and 0.5 metres high. This is most likely a prospecting work of mid 19th Century date. [1] A large scale metric survey of the Pinkworthy (or Pinkery) Pond environs was undertaken by Hazel Riley in 2012 as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. A subrectangular hollow was seen, measuring 9 metres by 1.8 metres, with a depth of 1 metre. A mound is located on the east edge of the hollow measuring 12 metres by 2 metres, with a height of 0.5 metres. These features lie at the southwest corner of Pinkworthy (or Pinkery) Pond. This monument is a small trial trench prospecting for ironstone and dates from the mid-19th Century. [2]
