MEM22617 - Possible undated clearance cairn on The Chains (Monument)

A dense cluster of stone was visible during field investigation in 2012. This is possibly a clearance cairn and has been previously interpreted as a cist.

Full Description

Possible stone lined cist noted during a non intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, undertaken by South West Archaeology as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. This falls within the general stony area MEM22612. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, which included this site. Noted was a somewhat denser cluster of stone than is seen in the surrounding area. It is unconvincing as a cist and is possibly a clearance cairn. [2]
