MEM22613 - Possible prehistoric bank on The Chains (Monument)

A low bank was visible during field investigation in 2012. This may be prehistoric in date, but the feature does not have a stony make-up which is typical of a prehistoric field boundary.

Full Description

A low bank was noted during a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, undertaken by South West Archaeologyas part of the Exmoor Mires Project. This feature is c. 1.5 metres wide, 0.3 metres high and is aligned northwest-southeast. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, which included this site. Noted was a low bank; the feature does not have the stony make-up typical of prehistoric field boundaries, suggesting it is not of prehistoric date. [2]
