Summary

A 19th Century building built of stone, with brick dressings and rendered gables with timber decoration. It has a tiled roof and ornate brick stacks. It may have incorporated or entirely replaced a linhay shown on historic mapping.

Full Description

The 2002 Conservation Area Character Appraisal for Dunster states "at the corner of St. Thomas Street and Dunster Steep, and prominent in the street scene, is an early 20th century building, an eclectic mix of stone, brick dressings, and render with a tiled roof, timber decoration to the gables, and ornate brick stacks." [1] The building is labelled "Grooms Cottage" on 2018 MasterMap data. [2] The building is mentioned in the 2018 Conservation Area Appraisal for Dunster. This document states the building is late 19th Century in date. [3] The building is shown on the 25 inch 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps. [4,5] A building is shown at this approximate location on the Tithe Map for Dunster. It is described in the Apportionment as "Linhay and Court". Its relationship with the current structure is not clear. [6] The heritage asset was assessed for inclusion on the Exmoor Local Heritage List in November 2022. It was decided to add the asset to the Local Heritage List. [7]
