MEM15394 - 19th Century clearance cairns west of Larkbarrow Farmhouse (Monument)


Three small stony mounds, 100 metres west of Larkbarrow farmhouse, are probably 19th Century field clearance cairns. They appear to have been damaged during World War Two.

Full Description

Three irregular stony mounds, centred SS 8192 4286, lie within a small improved field 100 metres to the west of Larkbarrow farmhouse, at around 395 metres above Ordnance Datum. The turf covered mounds are between 2 and 3.8 metres in diameter and stand 0.3-0.4 metres high. The mounds are most probably field clearance cairns dating from the mid 19th Century. There is some evidence of World War Two damage. The mounds were recorded at 1:2500 scale using differential GPS as part of an archaeological survey of the Larkbarrow area. [1,2]
