Full Description

A small rectangular quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork northeast of Moles Chamber, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7206 3956, the quarry measures approximately 30 metres long by 12 metres wide. It is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map but is not annotated, indicating it had been abandoned prior to publication in 1889. It is not clear what material was extracted here, but it is likely to have been building stone, possibly for the field boundaries constructed by the Knight family throughout the former Royal Forest of Exmoor in the mid 19th Century. [1-3] A number of small quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photography. [2, 4] Three of these quarries are marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map.
