Summary

An old quarry is labelled on historic mapping in this location. It was surveyed on a site visit in 2009 and was suggested to have supplied material for a group of nearby Bronze Age mounds.

Full Description

An old quarry is labelled on historic mapping in this location. [1-3] A large quarry pit lies on Furzehill Common at SS 73325 44398. The pit is 20 metres in diameter and 1 metres deep. It is close to a group of Bronze age sepulchral monuments and may have provided material for these. Small quarry pits, 3 metres in diameter and 1 metres deep are nearby, at SS 7339 4438, 7344 4437 and 7348 4439. The sites were recorded using hand held GPS during reconnaissance of the area. [4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
