Full Description

SS 7307 3403. Chapel (NR) (Remains of) [1] The column in the sketch, indicated by a circled dot on 6 inch Record sheet at SS 7307 3403, stands in a cottage garden and is composed mostly of rough stones, uncemented. The larger blocks of stone at the southwest corner are dressed, and carved in a fluted design as shown in sketch. The carved stone lies on top of the column. It does not seem that the smaller, rough stones belong to the original structure. [2] The isolated "column" of stones described by [2] is still extant but it is doubtful that this represents 'in situ' remains of the chapel, although the carved stones probably came from the building. [3] The column refered to by [3] does not survive in the front garden of Bentwichen Cottage at SS 7307 3403. However, pieces of moulded stone are visible in the walls of the garden. [4] Lysons records a chapel at Ben Twitchen, which was converted into a dwelling by 1772. [5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6]
