Site Event/Activity record ESO10 - 2002: TS - Whit Stones

A survey of the stones was carried out in 2002 due to concerns that a pathway created by moorland animals and perpetuated by recent flooding and the public, was significantly eroding the cairn at the site. Top soil and vegetation had been removed, revealing medium to large sized stones that may or may not be original cairn material. Running water from recent heavy rainfall had washed sediment into and over the cairn where the path ran through it. The two standing stones appeared solid and firmly embedded, though an area around them had been mildly eroded by animals and was free of typical moorland vegetation except grass. The survey aimed to establish the relationship between the stones and cairn and to show how the path intersected the cairn. A limit to the edge of the cairn stones was also recorded where vegetation had been cleared. The path was thought to be significantly eroding the cairn.
