Site Event/Activity record EMO4972 - 1906: Eval - Martinhoe Common

An examination of three barrows on Martinhoe Common by Rev JF Chanter with Captain H Fargus and Rev RW Oldham in July and August 1906. The barrows which showed the least signs of interference were examined in July and August 1906, with trenches 2 feet 6 inches wide driven in at ground level. The material appeared to have been disturbed and consisted of stones and peaty soil indiscriminately mixed up in approximately equal proportions, with only a few bits of charcoal recovered. The barrows were suggested to have originally consisted of small cairns of stones over internment pits, with a cover of turf and soil.
