ST0042 CARHAMPTON CP CARHAMPTON VILLAGE 15/3 Aller Farmhouse 22.5.69 - II Manor House, now dwelling. Late medieval, enlarged late C16-early C17, restored mid-late C20. Rendered over rubble, plain clay tiled roofs, higher independently roofed east end block, double Roman tiled wing at rear, external stone stack with projection at rear left gable end, large lateral stack to right of porch with stone cap renewed in brick, stone stack right gable end. Plan: open hall with solar over services at west end, soon after enlarged with room at east end, ceiled late C16-early Cl7 and north west wing added. 2 storeys, 1:1:1:2 bays, all C20 casements, roof projecting as catslide over stair turret end bay right with 2-light window, similar window right, full height gabled porch unlit on upper storey, 2-light casement to right of lateral stack, 2 windows in slightly projecting bays beyond, ground floor 3-light casement second bay left, similar to right of lateral stack, 4-light in projecting bays, depressed Tudor arch opening to porch, large moulded peaked inner doorframe with studded plank door. Rear elevation, C18 raised fielded and panelled door with inset lights to cross passage. Interior not seen, but said to contain moulded half bear on west side of cross passage partition with peaked door frame, west end room to left chamfered beams with step and runout stops, stair bay projection on south wall, peaked head cut in bressummer bear to fireplace, blocked but with evidence suggesting a very large bacon curing chamber or corn drying kiln; east end room has fine 4-panel compartment ceiling with moulded beams and moulded lintel to window on south front. Two true cruck trusses above hall arched braced with yoked apices, one tier of wind braces, moulded arch braced truss to east room. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, September 1980).
