MSO6279 - Bronze Age burial cairn on Dunkery Hill (Monument)

Summary

A large Bronze Age burial cairn on the eastern slope Dunkery Hill, visible as a stony mound measuring 17 metres in diameter and 1 metre high. It has been disturbed by a recently constructed shelter.

Full Description

Cairn with many stones exposed 18 paces diameter and 3 feet high (Wootton Courtenay 3). [1] Overgrown and disturbed, 0.8 metres high. [2] Hollow centre with external rim of stones. In good condition. [3] A large cairn lies on the eastern slope of Dunkery Hill at SS 91268 42581. It comprises a circular stony mound with a heather-covered outer rim, 17 metres in diameter and 1metre high. In the north quadrant is a small pile of stones and a recently constructed shelter 1.8 metres square. The cairn was surveyed using differential GPS as part of the RCHME Exmoor Project. [4] SS 9125 4258. Round cairn on Dunkery Hill. Forms part of a round cairn cemetery, the centre of which lies roughly 500 metres upslope to the north west.Scheduled on 23 April 2003. [5] This cairn has been transcribed as an earthwork from aerial photographs as part of the Exmoor National Mapping Programme survey. Centred on circa SS 9127 4257, the cairn is roughly circular and 17 metres in diameter. It is one of eight cairns recorded in this area as part of the NMP survey, although more are certainly present but not visible on the aerial photographs available. [7-9] The Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment of 2009 gave the site a survival score of 3. [11] The site was surveyed in April 2015 as part of the 2015 Exmoor Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment. It was given a survival score of 3. [12] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [13]
