Abstract/Summary

This report details the geophysical assessment of a survey area at Ruckham Coombe which was commissioned by Exmoor National Park Authority. The survey used magnetometry and resistivity techniques, and was undertaken as part of the Exmoor Mires Project; aiming to evaluate archaeological remains before rewetting of the raised mire within the locality. The survey area is located on raised mire, which has a large spring mire with a deeply incised valley on its western edge. The survey area was selected partly due to the presence of two circular anomalies identified from aerial photography and interpreted as either hut circles or ring cairns; walkover survey has also identified other potential features within the area. These circles were seen in the data, with one considered likely to be a hut circle and the other thought to be possibly a hut circle. Other anomalies were noted in the area which may be archaeological in nature, but this cannot be verified at this stage.
