Abstract/Summary

The archaeological walkover surveys described in this report were undertaken on behalf of the Exmoor Mires Project (EMP) to provide as full a picture of the historic environment on Spooners, Exmoor (NGR SS 778 377) as possible, in order to allow effective planning of mitigation measures in advance of mire restoration work. An initial stage of walkover was undertaken by South West Archaeology (SWARCH) during May 2012 which identified a total of 40 potential archaeological features. The parameters of this work and its results are detailed in a report (Walls and Morris, 2012) included as Appendix 2 in this document. In order to ground truth the results of the initial walkover, the EMP Historic Environment Officer undertook follow-up survey on 27th September and 4th October 2012 which, in combination with examination of LiDAR survey data, and further work during post restoration monitoring between March and June 2013, added a further 13 features to the total. This report presents the results of the latter work and updates the results and conclusions of the initial SWARCH survey (Appendix 1).
