MSO11644 - Possible post-medieval tree ring enclosure at Withiel Hill (Monument)

Summary

A low circular bank and shallow ditch interpreted as a tree ring enclosure has been stated to be visible on aerial photographs taken in 1947; however, this has not been verified by a review of the photographs or field investigation.

Full Description

A low circular bank and shallow ditch suggesting a tree ring enclosure was noted on aerial photographs. [1,2] Within area of rig and furrow (MMO806). [3] Nothing is visible on the ground at the National Grid Reference cited. [4] Two separate surveys of this area (Brendon Hills NMP and Exmoor NMP) reviewed of all aerial photographs in the NMR (including those cited in [1]), the HER and at the Exmoor National Park Authority. Neither survey identified the feature described by [1]. [5,6] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [7]
