MSO11485 - Eastern Bronze Age barrow on Outer Alcott (Monument)

One of three Bronze Age barrows grouped together on Outer Alcott. It is the best preserved of the three, consisting of a circular stony mound 7.5 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. It has a square hole in its summit.

One of 3 circular mounds on Outer Alcott, 7 paces diameter and 1.5 feet high with a hollow in the centre (Oare 12). [1] SS 8230 4477. A circular mound 0.3 to 0.4 metres high, composed of peat and stones is probably a small bowl barrow. (See G.Ps. AO/65/175/5-8). Surveyed at 1/2500. [2,3] Plotted at SS 8234 4481 on Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 map rather than at SS 8230 4477 given by OSAD and Grinsell. [4] A group of three prehistoric barrows centred at SS 8230 4488. All have been disturbed, probably as a result of World War Two activity in the area. There is a discrepancy between the locations of the barrows on the published Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map and the National Grid References (NGRs) given by [2,3]. The published locations are accepted here (with [2,3]'s NGRs in brackets). Barrow 1 lies on a relatively stone free surface, which has recently been burnt off and is centred at SS 8234 4480 (SS 8230 4477). The easternmost and best preserved barrow, it consists of a circular stony mound 7.5 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. A high proportion of brick sized surface stone is visible over the surface of the barrow. There is a square hollow in the summit, measuring 2.8 metres by 0.2 metres deep.
