Full Description

Small enclosures and pond shown on Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division 6 inch map - site of abandoned barn. [1] Marked "Hill Barn (Barn)" on Ordnance Survey 25 inch map. [2] Rectangular roofless building in small square enclosure with short curving bank. [3-5] Only earthworks remain at the site - there is a pond with a substantial platform next to it and the vague outlines of the barn shown as just a few courses of stone. [6] Hill Barn is shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch mapping of 1888. A three celled barn is depicted between two hedged paddocks or yards, one to the north, one to the south. At the southern end of the the latter is a large pond. [7] The remains of Hill Barn are as described above. They seem to represent a former outfarm, probably associated with the enclosing of Harwood Brakes. [8] In private ownership [9] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [10]
