Full Description

A pair of small circular quarries or extractive pits are visible on aerial photographs in fields south of Wintershead Farm, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7727 3655 on either side of a post-medieval field boundaries, the quarries measure 21 and 13 metres across. There is some indication that they may originally have been a single quarry, bisected by the field boundary. Both quarries are depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting they were abandoned some time prior to publication in 1890. They most likely date to the post medieval period, although they may also be medieval in origin.
