MMO2774 - Post-medieval quarry on Great Cornham (Monument)

A small irregular quarry is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork west of Cornham Farm and adjacent to the River Barle, Exmoor. Centred at approximately SS 7425 3913, the quarry measures approximately 13 metres across at its widest point. The ground around the quarry appears slightly uneven, possibly as a result of spoil being dumped around it. A quarry is depicted and annotated at this location on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it may still have been in use in 1890. There is no indication as to what material was being extracted here; however, Cornham Ford iron mines lie approximately 500 metres to the west, and it is possible that this pit was dug in an attempt to follow the iron seam.
