Full Description

Two small pits visible on aerial photographs as earthworks on the western side of Timberscombe Common are most likely post-medieval gravel pits. The larger of the two, at SS 9603 4165 measures approximately 16 metres across. It is depicted and annotated as "gravel pit" on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it may have still been in use in 1889 when the map was published. The smaller pit at SS 9600 4166 measures approximately 14 metres across. Neither is depicted on the 1nd Edition map of 1904, suggesting they were abandoned prior to this date.
