Full Description

A substantial quarry, probably dating to the post-medieval period, is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork cut into the west facing slope of Timberscombe Common, Timberscombe. Centred at SS 9599 4183, the quarry measures 120 metres long by 85 metres wide. Several tracks can be seen leading to the quarry from the main footpath to the west. The quarry is depicted and annotated on both the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting it was still in use as late as 1904, when the 2nd Edition map was published. It is not clear what material was extracted here but given the large scale of the quarry, it may well have been limestone or building stone. [1-4] The site is recorded on 2018 MasterMap data and labelled "Quarry (disused)". [5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6]
