Full Description

Three circular depressions are visible on aerial photographs at the northern end of Timberscombe Common, Timberscombe. Two of them, one at SS 9647 4215 and measuring 9 metres across and one at SS 96424214 measuring 18 metres across, are depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map and annotated "old gravel pit." A smaller pit, at SS 9650 4214 and measuring 8 metres across is not depicted. It therefore appears they were abandoned prior to publication in 1889 but they most likely date to the post-medieval period.
