MMO2437 - Post-medieval quarry south of Wellshead Allotment (Monument)

A quarry pit is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork. It is annotated as Old Quarry on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 and therefore probably had passed out of use by that time.

Full Description

A quarry of probable post-medieval date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs to the south of Wellshead Allotment, Exford parish, centred on circa SS 8384 4137. The pit is teardrop shaped, approximately 40 metres long and 10 metres wide at the widest point. It is annotated as Old Quarry on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889 and therefore had probably passed out of use by the end of the 19th Century. Five similar pits can be seen within one kilometre to the east. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
