Full Description

A Second World War crater is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as an earthwork centred on circa SS 8590 4354 on Babe Hill, Luccombe parish. The 14 metre wide crater was probably a result of artillery training exercises firing from the Exmoor Artillery range to the north, rather than an enemy bombing raid. The crater is now infilled and it is possible that the resulting soil mark was later mistaken as a levelled barrow or cairn (MSO7323).
