Full Description

A medieval or post-medieval quarry is visible on aerial photographs as a substantial earthwork above Hoaroak Water, Exmoor. Centred at SS 7473 4208, the quarry is cut into the side of a small valley which appears to have been formed by a tributary of Hoaroak Water, and measures 25 metres across. It is depicted but not annotated on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it had been abandoned prior to publication in 1890. Similar quarries can be seen to the north and east, on the opposite side of Hoaroak water.
