MMO1957 - Modern quarry north of Old Lake Lane (Monument)

A small quarry or extractive pit is visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards as an earthwork centred on circa SS 7102 4750, to the north of Old Lake Lane, Lynton and Lynmouth parish. At approximately 7 metres in diameter, it is the smaller of two such pits in this area, the second being 100 metres to the north-west. The pit is situated within a small kink in the course of the adjacent field boundary, which may indicate the pit predated the enclosure of the field. However, neither the pit nor the deviation in the course of the field boundary is marked on the 1st or 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map. This may indicate the pit post dates their publication and dates from the early 20th Century.
