MMO1911 - World War Two earthwork on Cheriton Ridge (Monument)

Irregularly shaped earthwork features of Second World War date can be seen on aerial photographs of the 1940s. They are probably related to military training activities, possibly associated with the Exmoor Firing Ranges.

Irregularly shaped earthwork features of Second World War date on Cheriton Ridge, centred on circa SS 7400 4535, can be seen on aerial photographs of the 1940s. The earthworks comprise a series of conjoined roughly circular scoops or shallow pits of differing sizes. Their function is unknown but similar features recur over a large area, some appearing as low earthworks, some cut features such as this, but all are probably related to military training activities, possibly associated with the Exmoor Firing Ranges, to the east and southeast. [1,2] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [3]
