MEM23909 - Hiccombe (Building)

The Tithe Map for Brompton Regis depicts an L shaped building at c. SS 9552 2999. The parcel to the north is labelled 996, which the accompanying Apportionment describes as "Goodmans: House etc", owned and occupied by William Litson. Directly to the south is a further parcel, labelled 996; this is described as "Hiccombe Green: House and Garden", owned and occupied by Mary Howe. It is not clear which is the correct label, although it is noticeable that what appears to be an empty square to the north of 996 is shown as a large house on later mapping editions, and it is therefore possible this might be 996 and the L shaped building 995. [1,2] The 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map depicts a building at SS 9552 2999, which is likely to contain at least some fabric from the first building mentioned above. There is a further, larger house, broadly rectangular in plan, to the northwest, where the "empty square" mentioned above is shown. The two buildings and another to the east (MEM23908) are together labelled "Hiccombe". [3] The arrangement in [2] is repeated on the 2nd Edition map. [4] The buildings are shown on the 2018 MasterMap data, with some alterations and extensions to their plans. The northern building appears to be labelled Hiccombe House. Further buildings have been added to the east and southeast of the buildings. [5]
