Full Description

The building is depicted on the 1839 Tithe Map for Parracombe. [1] The building is labelled as "Hednacott" on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, although not on the 2nd Edition map. Both maps depict an Ordnance Survey benchmark on the southwestern (road facing) elevation of the southern corner of the building. [2,3] A cottage shown as “Headnacott” on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map which probably dates from the 18th Century. The manner in which the first floor windows break through the eaves line indicates a former thatched roof with swept eaves. There are dripstones above the ground-floor double casement windows with six or eight panes. [4] A cottage shown as ‘Headnacott’ on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map [2] but likely to be earlier – as lower status buildings are rarely named on maps, this suggests it was a farmhouse at this time. [5] The heritage asset was assessed for inclusion on the Exmoor Local Heritage List in November 2022. It was decided to add the asset to the Local Heritage List. [6]
