MDE1318 - Bronze Age stone hammer or macehead on Swincombe Farm (Find Spot)

SS 7164 4195. A plain perforated stone hammer (or macehead) approximately 2.5 inches by 1.75 inches and 1.5 inches thick was found in 1973 by Mr J F Huxtable of Swincombe Farm, Challacombe while he was ploughing. The find site is as indicated by Mr Huxtable to C Whybrow who is in possession of the hammer. [1,2] SS71644195 Mr J F Huxtable is now deceased but his son, who actually found this stone hammer, confirmed the findspot and said the stone is now in Barnstaple Museum (see MDE12873). [3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
