Full Description

"Withiel Hill pit, disused" is marked on the 6" map. It was one of the Brendon Hills Iron Ore Company mines and was previously called Florey Hill mine. It was opened in 1865 and closed 1877. "Withiel Hill pit, disused" is marked on the Ordnance Survey 6" map of 1962. [1-3] "Level (disused)" printed at ST00263360 on OS 1:10,000 map. [4] "Old level"printed on OS 6" map. [5] All mine workings have been levelled by ploughing. [6] A second shaft at SS 99353517 has been filled and levelled by ploughing. A adit conneced to the shafts might have been located at circa SS 99633469. [7] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [8]
