The information contained in the Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record has been produced from various sources, a substantial part being compiled by both Devon and Somerset County Councils before being transferred to Exmoor National Park Authority in 2009. The Authority acknowledges the work carried out by both County Councils in establishing and maintaining the Historic Environment Records for the National Park.
The ENPHER contains data transferred in 2021-2022 from Historic England’s National Record for the Historic Environment as part of their Heritage Information Access Strategy (HIAS). Monument and Event records that contain data from this resource will include references for an NHRE HOB UID reference, and will contain a link to the Source record for the transfer project (SEM7987). The data has been provided to the ENPHER under the terms of the Open Government Licence v3.0.
Users of the HER website should be aware that there is a backlog of information that has not yet been entered into the ENPHER. Also, as the data held has been compiled from a number of sources, users may find that information on a particular site is split between several records, or duplicated on more than one record, and that some records are incomplete and may not include designation status. Certain records are also currently not marked for public display as their data has not been reviewed. We are undertaking a programme of record checking and enhancement to address these issues.
As part of each Monument record, the description for a site is recorded from published and unpublished sources. Each source is assigned a number, recorded in square brackets, with the full reference provided in the Sources/Archives section that follows the description. ENPA aims to develop the ENPHER to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible; however, users should be aware that source material may be inaccurate and the sources referenced may not be complete or validated for displaying on the website.
For the reasons given above, information for planning related studies/enquiries must be obtained directly from the ENPHER and not via the website. We would also highly recommend that users conducting research projects contact the HER direct. This service is provided free of charge and can be requested by using our online contact us form, by e-mailing HER@exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk or by calling 01398 322273. Users can obtain exports of the database in various formats, including GIS data, through this service.
Information held within the ENPHER is subject to Intellectual Property Rights. HER Monument, Event and Principal Archaeological Landscape data is made available under the terms of the Open Government Licence v3.0. Please credit "Exmoor National Park HER (ENPHER)" with any reuse of the data. Copyright for all data held, including GIS mapping outputs, is held by the originating organisations (including Historic England) or individuals.
Some datasets recorded on the HER are held for reference only and are derived from external sources. These sources should be consulted directly to obtain accurate, up to date information:
- Data on designated sites, including Scheduled Monuments, Listed Buildings and Registered Parks and Gardens should be obtained from Historic England and can be viewed on the National Heritage List for England website. Please be aware that Listed Building GIS data displayed on the HER website has been polygonised by ENPA and is for reference only - it should not be used as a definitive boundary or to indicate curtilage. Listed Building list entries are Crown Copyright and have been provided to us by Historic England, licenced under the Open Government Licence.
- Information on Conservation Areas should be obtained from Exmoor National Park Authority - follow the link to view their planning pages on Conservation Areas.
- Finds recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme are not displayed on the HER website but can be viewed and searched by visiting finds.org.uk/.
The inclusion of a site or monument within the ENPHER cannot be taken to mean or imply that there is public right of access, or that access permission will be granted upon request.
