Mesolithic adze found near Withiel Florey

What is it?

This is an adze, made of chert and thought to date from the Mesolithic period (dating from around 10,000 BC to 4000 BC). Adzes are used for working wood.

Where was it found?

It was found during pond clearance works near Withiel Florey. The site is recorded on our database as MEM22500.

Why is it important?

The find provides evidence of Mesolithic activity in this area of Exmoor and is the only known example of a tool of this date and type found within the National Park.
