MSO7427 - Modern mound to northeast of Joaney How (Monument)

Summary

A small mound, 5 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high lies to the east of Joaney How on Dunkery Hill. It is probably of recent origin and no longer thought to be a Bronze Age burial cairn.

Full Description

Small mound discovered in 1978, 103 metres east of Joaney How barrow. Possible barrow. [1] A small mound, 5 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high is recorded at SS 9092 4280. The area was investigated as part of the RCHME Exmoor project. Many such mounds are scattered over Dunkery Hill and this mound is unlikely to be a prehistoric burial cairn. It is more likely to be associated with more recent activity on the hill. [2] Possibly constructed as a secondary cairn. Forms part of prehistoric round cairn cemetery centred on Robin How and Joaney How. Revised scheduling 23 April 2003. [3] The Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment of 2009 gave the site a survival score of 0. [4] The site was surveyed in April 2015 as part of the 2015 Exmoor Scheduled Monument Condition Assessment. It was given a survival score of 0. [5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6]
