MEM22810 - Bronze Age cairn northwest of Dunkery Beacon (Monument)

SS 8911 4160. Cutcombe 5c, Vowles D, diameter 3 metres and height 0.3 metres. A very small cairn, seen on Vowles plan. [1,2] SS 8912 4160. Cutcombe 5c. A small cairn of tightly packed stones, mostly about 0.1 metres across. It is 2.7 metres in diameter and 0.3 metres high, the north and west sides rather straight. The stones would need levering out and consequently the cairn has withstood the ravages of visitors. Not conspicuous, it is incongruous considering the size of the other cairns in the group but may be prehistoric. Certainly its situation, below the crest, precludes use as a marker cairn. [3] Cutcombe 5c lies to the northwest of the main summit cairn (MEM22803). It comprises a small stony mound 2.7 metres in diameter and 0.4 metres high. [4] The five cairns on the summit of Dunkery Beacon were surveyed in August 2004 in response to a request by The National Trust to cover some of the monuments to protect them from further visitor damage. [6] The cairn was transcribed as closely as possible from aerial photographs as part of the Exmoor National Mapping Programme survey, but in spite of its size it is not clearly visible, due in part to the vegetation cover of this area and the erosion caused by visitors to the site. [7-14] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [15]
