Full Description

Lynton Cottage Hotel, north walk hill. Probably early c19 and later. Long 2 storey stucco limewashed front overlooking the sea. Right hand end of front has 3 window bow projecting wing. Wood casements with glazing bars, hood moulds at 1st floor. Other windows also have hood moulds, mainly at 1st floor. Slate roof with rafters projecting at eaves. [1] Lynton Cottage Hotel is rendered with a slate roof and dates from the early 19th Century with later 19th and 20th Century additions. The original mainly two-storey range is in a cottage-ornee neo-Tudor style and has five bays of small-paned casement windows with first floor drip moulds. There are French doors and casement bow windows to the ground floor. The later extension is three storey with many gables, brick stacks with Tudor detail, and mainly four-pane sash windows. The interior has some good original features including a bifurcating staircase with stick balustrade and swept handrails, fine 19th Century fireplaces, marble with inset tiles on the ground floor, and cast-iron on the first floor. There is a mature Chilean pine (Monkey-puzzle) adjoining the Lynton Cottage Hotel. [2] The Tithe Map labels this building as 'Mrs Sandfords, Lynton Cottage'. [3] The Lynton Cottage was photographed in the early 20th Century. It was sold by the Sanfords to Sir Charles Smith in 1860. Thomas Baker (who owned the Royal Castle Hotel) purchased it in 1870 and his son then ran it as a private hotel. [4] The house and walls were visited in April 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. The building received a BAR score of 6. [5] The building is mentioned in the 2019 Conservation Area Appraisal for Lynton. [6] The building is shown on the 2022 MasterMap data. [7]
