Full Description

SS 7160 4360. Boundary stones marking border of the Forest of Exmoor. One of several boundary stones marking the western boundary of the forest of exmoor as it turns eastwards from the saddle stone (MSO6845). [1] The six inch 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map shows a series of 11 boundary stones marking the Parish Boundary between Exmoor Parish and Lynton and Lynmouth Parish north of Winaway. There are further stones depicted along the boundary as it carries on across Thorn Hill and Benjamy, before it reaches Hoaroak Farmstead. [2] Many of the boundary stones are still shown on modern MasterMap data. [3] Several boundary stones mark the Devon/Somerset county boundary as it crosses Thorn Hill. They lie just to north of the modern fence line. The stones are all rectangular slabs of local stone and they are all now prone or leaning at 45 degrees or greater. The stones are depicted on the 1st edition map of 1891. The stones were noted during reconnaisssance of the area. [4,5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6]
